Gerund

Gerund adalah kata benda yang berasal dari kata kerja ditambah –ing, misalnya swimming, eating, fishing, shopping, dancing, dan singing. Bila diperhatikan, gerund mempunyai bentuk yang sama dengan present participle, bedanya gerund berfungsi sebagai kata benda, sedangkan present participle sebagai kata sifat yang menerangkan kata benda.

contoh:
- Swimming is good.
- Your singing is very beautiful.
- Playing tennis is fun.

Infinitive


Infinitive adalah verbal berbentuk kata kerja dasar yang umumnya ditambah to di depannya, misalnya to eat, to say, to run, to work, to study. infinitive pun dapat berfungsi sebagai kata benda (noun). Bedanya, penggunaan infinitive lebih luas daripada gerund yang hanya berfungsi sebagai kata benda.
contoh :
- To say is easy but to do is difficult.- To understand English is not an easy job.

Modal 

Modal auxiliaries mempunyai banyak fungsi yang berbeda – beda. Modal auxilaries yang diguanakan dalam kajian kali ini antara lain; can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, dan would.
contoh :
1. Can
- I can speak English.
- Can I go to the cinema?

2. Could

- I could speak English.

- Could I go to the cinema, please?

3. May

 -  It may rain today. 

 - May I go to the cinema?

4. Might

- It might rain today.

- Might I help you?

5. Must

- I must go to the supermarket today.

- You must be tired.

6. Shall

- I shall meet you tomorrow.

- Shall I carry your bag?

7. Should

- You should drive carefully in bad weather.

- You should switch off the light when you leave the room.

8. Will

- I will stop smoking.

- Will you please shut the door?

9. Would

- Sometimes he would bring me some flowers.

- Would you shut the door, please?
